Work in the studio will influence how you live

I was at a meeting this past weekend with several Pilates instructors from Austin. After greetings and introductions, we began talking about business issues, specifically questions of taxes and hiring. After going around a bit on how others run their businesses, it dawned on me they were trying to resolve these issues the way Pilates sorts out the body and resolves muscle imbalances. In essence, applying the smarts of the Pilates Method to running a business. I found it refreshing! One particular instructor was talking about how he didn't want to make his daily operations more complicated. He liked how smooth things were running and was afraid to weigh down the daily operations with more tasks than necessary. As he was talking, I thought to myself “I don’t want to burden my clients with more exercises than is necessary for strengthening their bodies.” It sounded to me that he was trying to be efficient as we are taught to be efficient when using the principles of Pilates. And I told him, that of course it made sense to not complicate business procedures, because just as he didn’t want to complicate his teaching, he surely wouldn’t want to complicate his business. This idea of taking Pilates out of the studio is what many of my mentors call making Pilates a lifestyle. I remember Romana explaining that if we balanced our bodies like we balance our check books to the penny we would get more benefits from the work. So right now as you read this pull in your stomach and balance your torso over your pelvis. Now, it’s you who are making Pilates a lifestyle.
